El Mac and Retna are two successful LA artists who have collaborated on several projects together, producing an interesting complementary blend between El Mac’s linework portraits and Retna’s calligraphy.
El Mac is a photo-realistic portrait artist. He is best known for the wavy squiggle pattern that he uses in many of his murals. Many of his subjects reflect spiritual iconography and the Mexican Chicano culture.
Retna is primarily known for his distinctive glyph lettering style. The calligraphy is a unique language developed from Egyptian hieroglyphics, Hebrew, Arabic, Blackletter, and Native American scripts.
