Seasons of Heaven
Seasons of Heaven is an upcoming indie game developed by California-based studio Any Arts Production. Based on a book by Nico Augusto, the game’s story revolves around Yann, a young boy with Asperger’s Syndrome, and Ani, the boy’s dog.
The first game trailer was released on December 19, 2016. The trailer showcased some of the game’s visuals, as well as a few glimpses of the game’s exploration and puzzle mechanics.
Players are given the option of controlling both of the characters. When playing as Yann, the game mechanics appear similar to titles like Legend of Zelda or The Last Guardian. Yann can direct Ani with basic commands, or players can take control of the little dog directly for missions. Switching between characters will likely play a factor in solving puzzles as the two characters run, climb and slink through the game’s open world.
Interactive floating text appears over objects, apparently to highlight clues and provide some narrative context.
There also appears to be built-in aerial travel. With Ani tucked safely in his backpack, Yann can fly through the air in a makeshift glider or by hitching a ride from a winged blue spirit.
Exploring the stunning HD environments is clearly going to be the the main attraction for gamers. Featuring expansive plains, and darker forests lit by the glow of mysterious artificial lights on the trees, the visuals of Seasons of Heaven appear serene and otherworldly.
The pristine island that the protagonists traverse displays anachronistic signs of past habitation. The central mystery seems to gravitate around the presence of ancient statues and stones inscribed with glowing runes, a forlorn tower, and ghostly spirits.
A heartbeat and a steady beep are the first sounds that you’ll hear in the trailer. The sound of the beating heart slowly disappears, and the steady beep gives way to a flatline. Strings, and an echoing guitar accompany the initial views of the game’s environments.
With lush environments, mystery, and a soothing soundtrack to listen to for hours, the debut game of the Any Arts team is shaping up to be a promising adventure.
Seasons of Heaven will released as an exclusive title for the Nintendo Switch.
